Doula is a professional person who has received non-medical training to provide physical, emotional and informative support to women and their families before, during and after birth. In the modern birth culture, the doula may be the only person who provides uninterrupted support to parents throughout the entire birth process and the moment of birth. Doula works intensively with mom and dad before birth to explore their expectations, fears, and desires for birth and parenting. Doula supports the family so that they develop a mindset to deal with pain and equip them to deal with the situation when things don't go as expected or planned.

Doulas can use massage techniques, use birth physiology knowledge for positioning advice, encourage, assist with breathing and meditation techniques, and help the family understand general hospital procedures. Doulas can take the lead in maternity support or simply stand quietly on the sidelines and protect the birthing area until the need arises. Doulas can encourage and assist the father who supports the mother according to the family's wishes and, if desired, can also assist in the father's personal journey. Doulas stay with the family after the baby is born, until breastfeeding begins or until the mother and baby can sleep comfortably. They are ready to go to the interview in the weeks and months following the birth.
